The Starlet and The Projectionist

about

One of my best friends Michael Sarnowski wrote the words to this song. It was a very challenging process but he put together a perfect-fitting piece of poetry for me to use as the lyrics, something I had never done before. I remember late-night talks about syllable counts for each line. He is someone who has influenced me many times in the past and I figured this was one way I could try to repay him. The song itself has another cyclical-style drum beat to it and a very melodic and light feel to it. I'm not sure if he heard the repeating sound during the breaks and heard a film fluttering from a reel-to-reel but it somehow worked itself into the story.

lyrics

Your words glitch like reel-to-reels converted,
like exposures, burning pictures permanent.
But girl, I’ll meet you on cue where the frames mesh,
where shadows are broken into shades.
I’m begging you, Iris, my damsel please
spare the rods and spoil the cones.
I’m in distress over your dress, yes, I’m positive
you’re getting applause

with the gift wrap of your bones.

This moment is the climax of the fight,
Our hero might do right tonight, make the villain beg for his life
When the screen goes black and the theater empties
I’ll ask if all of this truly felt right.

To imagine you imagining me,
we’re discreet under silver screen sheets.
To imagine you imagining me,
Found you asleep where negatives bathe in bleach
To imagine you imagining me,
you’re the flood light in the eyes of the search team.
To imagine you imagining me
