Simple Rule

about

This is the other song that Ashley Moran made much better than it originally was. I wanted her to sing the lead and I sang back-up for this one. The original is in all even bars of four, straightforward, but very, very slow. So once all the vocals were recorded, I ended up chopping the tails off some of the measures and the resulting verses alternate between 3/4, 5/4, 4/4, and 2/4. The good part is that most of the time the listener never really notices since the beat is still simple and regular. This was also the first song I ever wrote that had the swing feel to it.

lyrics

Run around
It’s alright
(I know it happens every time)
Drink tonight
It’s alright
(It works every time)
Break my heart
‘Cause you know
Lovers come
Lovers go
(What do I know?)

It’s a simple rule
Medicine for the wound
I had found a way out
I had found you

Sun is down
It’s alright
(I know it happens every night)
Sleep tonight
It’s alright
(It works every time)
Break my heart
‘Cause you know
Lovers come
Lovers go
(What do I know?)

It’s a simple rule
Medicine for the wound
I had found a way out
I had found you
(What do I know?)
It’s a simple rule
Medicine for the wound
I am on my way now
I have lost you
I am on my way now
I have lost you
